Mahjong Tile Materials Compared
| Material | Weight & sound | Color options | Engraving | Typical price tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cast acrylic (PMMA) | Even weight, soft solid click | Clear, translucent, pastel, glitter, layered | Crisp, recessed characters | Mid to premium |
| Melamine | Hard, dense, loud click | Opaque molded colors | Molded or shallow engraving | Entry to mid |
| Cast resin | Heavy, smooth | Opaque or two-tone | Engraved and paint-filled | Mid to premium |

| Bakelite | Heavy, warm | Butterscotch, green, red | Deep carved | Collector / vintage |
Cast Acrylic Mahjong Tiles
Acrylic mahjong tiles are cut from cast PMMA sheet, then machined, engraved and sealed. Cast sheet (rather than extruded sheet) machines cleanly and holds a sharp edge, which matters for a 0.3 mm chamfer.
Where acrylic wins
- Color: clear, frosted, translucent and multi-layer tiles are only practical in acrylic. This is why pastel and "jelly" sets are acrylic.
- Engraving: laser-etched characters sit inside the tile, so they cannot rub off.
- Small runs: no mold is needed, so a brand can order a custom colorway from 50 sets.
Where acrylic needs care
- It scratches more easily than melamine, so a clear coat on the face is worth specifying.
- Alcohol and acetone can craze it. See how to clean acrylic mahjong tiles.
Melamine Mahjong Tiles
Melamine mahjong tiles are compression molded from melamine resin. It is a hard material with a loud, satisfying click, and molding makes it economical at high volume. Most boxed sets in supermarkets and gift shops are melamine.
The trade-offs are color and flexibility. Melamine is opaque, the characters are usually molded or shallow, and every new design needs a mold, which pushes minimum quantities up.
Resin Mahjong Tiles
Cast resin tiles are poured into molds, often in two colors to imitate the old bone-and-bamboo look. They feel heavy and smooth and are common in premium Asian sets. Like melamine, a new design needs a mold. For a broader view of plastic mahjong sets, it helps to know that "plastic" can mean any of these three.
Bone, Bamboo and Bakelite
Early 20th-century sets were carved from bone backed with bamboo. Bakelite sets from the 1930s–1950s are collected for their warm colors. Both are now mainly collector items, and bone is restricted in some markets.
How to Choose a Tile Material
- Mass-market retail at the lowest price: melamine.
- Designer colors, clear or layered tiles, small custom runs: cast acrylic.
- Heavy two-tone traditional look: cast resin.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are most mahjong tiles made of today?
Melamine for mass-market sets; cast acrylic or resin for mid and premium sets.
Are acrylic mahjong tiles better than melamine?
They are better for color, clarity and small custom runs. Melamine is harder and cheaper at high volume.
Are acrylic mahjong tiles heavy enough?
Yes. Weight depends mainly on tile size; full-size 36 mm acrylic tiles feel solid in the hand.
Do acrylic tiles turn yellow?
Cast acrylic is UV-stable in normal indoor use. Keep sets out of long direct sunlight, as with any plastic.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MOQ for a custom mahjong set?
Fully custom tiles start at 50 sets per design with standard packaging and stock accessories. Accessory customization starts at 250 sets and custom packaging at 1,000 sets. A different artwork, tile size or format counts as a separate design.
How long does a custom mahjong order take?
Paid samples take 5–7 days for a single engraved tile, about 7 days for a 12-tile color check, or 7–10 days for a full set including air freight. Production takes 15–20 days after sample approval, then air freight 3–7 days or sea freight 14–30 days.
Do sample fees come off the production order?
No. Sample fees are quoted and paid separately and are not credited to production orders. The sample exists to settle the specification before the bulk run.
Can you match a Pantone color exactly?
We match from the in-stock cast PMMA sheet range to your Pantone or hex target and lock the choice against the approved physical sample. A 100% exact match to a Pantone reference is not promised from stock sheet.
Will you sign an NDA for our mahjong artwork?
Not for mahjong projects. Your artwork is used only for your production, never published, never reused and never offered to another buyer, but mahjong production is a multi-partner supply chain that a single-factory NDA cannot honestly bind. For non-mahjong acrylic projects, an NDA is available on request.
Put the specification in the quote
Send the format, tile size, engraving route, color target, accessories, packaging tier, quantity and artwork status. We return a line-item quote and a paid-sample plan against that specification.
