Custom Mahjong Ordering Guide
Custom Mahjong FAQ — Price, MOQ & Lead Time
USMJ is a custom acrylic mahjong manufacturer in Shenzhen, China, serving B2B buyers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia since 2012. Below are the questions buyers ask before placing a first order. Every product page also has its own FAQ section.
Mahjong Pricing & MOQ
What is the minimum order quantity for a custom mahjong set — per design or per order?
Fully custom tiles start at 50 sets per tile design, with standard packaging and stock accessories. Accessory customization starts at 250 sets and custom packaging at 1,000 sets. The floor applies per design, not per purchase order: a different artwork, tile size or format counts as a separate design. See personalized mahjong tiles and custom options.
What does a custom mahjong set cost per set?
Published FOB Shenzhen references for a standard-spec engraved set are $58 at 50 sets, $56 at 100, $50 at 200, $49 at 250, and $47 at 500. Reference only · FOB Shenzhen · confirmed on your written quote. Final price follows the approved tile size, engraving route, colourway count, accessories and packaging. For background on the inputs that move the number, see the price ladder on our mahjong tiles for sale page, browse every line if you plan to buy mahjong set components with matching racks and cases, or send the brief straight through the contact form.
What is included in a written quote?
The quote names the specification it prices, the tile format and size, the engraving or printing route, the colourway count, the accessories and packaging tier, the sample tier and lead time, the production lead time, and the freight and payment terms. We quote per approved specification rather than publishing a flat unit price.
Can you quote several quantity tiers at once?
Yes — name the tiers you are weighing (say 50 / 100 / 250 / 500) and the quote prices each one so you can see where unit cost steps down. The published ladder on the mahjong tile sets page already shows the shape of it. Reorder pricing holds against the same specification unless material cost moves, and we confirm that in writing before the repeat run.
What is the minimum order and typical price for custom mahjong sets?
Fully custom mahjong tiles — your artwork, engraving, and colourways — start at 50 sets per design with standard packaging and stock accessories; accessory customization starts at 250 sets and custom packaging at 1,000 sets. Reference pricing runs from $58 per set at 50 sets to $47 at 500. Full detail is in the samples and shipping and payment answers below.
Do you work with startups and small businesses?
Yes. The 50-set production floor is designed for a commercial test launch without forcing a large inventory commitment. Start with a paid sample, then the same production line, the same 100% visual inspection, and the same colour check against your approved sample regardless of order size.
Mahjong Samples
Are sample fees separate from production orders?
Yes. Samples are quoted and paid separately from production orders, and sample fees are never credited to a later bulk-order invoice. The quote names the sample tier before you pay. The sample tiers are listed in the next answer.
How long does a sample take, and what does each tier cost?
A single engraved tile runs $40–80 and takes 5–7 days. A 12-tile colour check runs $180–320 and takes about 7 days. A full set sample runs $300–500 and takes 7–10 days including air freight. Tile colours come from the in-stock cast PMMA sheet range and are locked against the approved physical sample.
Which sample tier should I buy?
Buy the tier that answers the decision in front of you. A single tile settles engraving depth, fill and face finish. A 12-tile colour check settles the colourway. A full set settles the complete packout including rack, pusher, case and insert.
Can I approve from photos or video instead of waiting for the sample to arrive?
Yes. We send high-resolution photos and short video of the finished sample on the QC bench. Colour, though, should be approved from the physical sample: a screen cannot carry a colour target reliably.
Can I reorder a previous set without a new sample?
A repeat order can run against the retained approved sample when the specification is unchanged. We confirm the drawing, material, colour, finish, packing and artwork revision in writing before release.
Mahjong Production, Materials & QC
How long does production take — and what can extend it?
Production takes 15–20 days after you approve the sample. Three things extend it: multiple colourways that each need a sheet approval, custom packaging (which joins from 1,000 sets), and artwork that changes after approval. See the manufacturing process for what happens in each of those days.
What tile sizes and construction can you produce?
Three standard tile bodies: 30 × 23 × 13 mm, 32 × 23 × 13 mm, and 36 × 25 × 15 mm, with custom sizes quoted per drawing. All four play edges carry a 0.3 mm CNC chamfer. Tiles are single-layer cast PMMA or 4-layer laminated with a translucent middle layer.
What material do you use for mahjong tiles?
Cast PMMA only — no melamine and no extruded sheet. We quote the named sheet grade, colour, finish and thickness, and the datasheet for the selected grade is available on request. See the manufacturing process for the production route.
What is the difference between cast PMMA and melamine tiles?
Melamine has a lower unit cost but feels hollow, shows mould-line seams and chips at edge contact. Cast PMMA has controlled weight, holds engraving depth crisply and reads premium on the table. USMJ builds tiles in cast PMMA only.
Can you engrave and print on the same tile?
Yes. Characters and suit marks are usually laser engraved, filled and sealed, while brand Jokers and printed tile backs are UV printed under a clear-coat seal. Both routes are confirmed on the paid sample before production.
How is quality checked before shipping? Can I book my own inspector?
Every set gets 100% visual inspection and a colour check against your approved physical sample in our ISO 9001-certified factory. ISTA 3A drop testing is available on request or on specified programs. Third-party inspection is welcome — name the inspection body and scope in the purchase order. See the quality control process.
Can you provide formal quality documentation with the order?
List each required document at RFQ stage. Availability and cost depend on the named material, supplier, test scope and destination. ISO 9001, SGS and RoHS records are available within the scope named on each certificate or report.
What if my order arrives with damaged or missing pieces?
Photograph the outer carton, inner packaging, labels, affected pieces and received quantity, then send them with the order number. We compare the evidence with the approved sample, the released drawing and the packing record, and confirm the remedy in writing. Our quality control page explains how that review separates a production nonconformity from transit damage.
Can I pause or change an order after the PO is confirmed?
It depends where the order sits on the floor. Before cutting starts, a hold or change is usually straightforward. Once tiles are cut, engraved or laminated, a change means remaking the affected parts, and we confirm the cost and revised schedule in writing before proceeding.
Can I visit or audit the factory?
Yes — factory visits and buyer audits are welcome. Our 3,000 m² facility with 50+ staff is at Room 1506, Block B, Xinghe Creative Center, Xixiang, Bao'an District, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. Use our quality control page to define the certificates, sample evidence, process records and inspection records you want to review, then email inquiry@usmahjongcn.com to arrange the visit.
Mahjong Shipping & Payment
What is the default freight term?
FOB Shenzhen is our default term: we cover everything until the goods are loaded at the port of Shenzhen. From there, freight, insurance, import duty and delivery are on the buyer or the buyer's forwarder. Background reading is in our mahjong buying guides.
What shipping options are available, and how long do they take?
Air freight runs 3–7 days and sea freight 14–30 days. Express courier is available for samples and small parcels. Transit time is quoted against the destination, the shipment size and the mode you choose.
How do I decide between sea and air freight?
Deadline and shipment size decide it. Air lands in 3–7 days but costs several times the sea rate, so it fits samples, first batches and genuinely urgent launches. Sea at 14–30 days is the normal choice for a full production run.
Can you split the shipment if part of the order is urgent?
Yes. We routinely split shipments — air freight for the urgent portion at 3–7 days and sea freight for the balance at 14–30 days — when a launch date needs stock on the shelf before the full run lands. See the manufacturing process for production timing.
If a deadline tightens mid-production, can urgent designs be pulled forward?
Yes. A split does not have to be planned at order time. When a deadline moves, we check each design's production and QC status and confirm in writing which designs can ship first and what that does to the freight cost.
Can you quote freight separately, or can I arrange my own freight?
Both. Every quote itemises product, branding and freight as separate lines, and on request we add carton count, per-carton dimensions and gross weight so your forwarder can price it. Freight is then priced from that carton data rather than from a flat rate.
What shipment tracking do I get after dispatch?
At dispatch you receive the carrier, the tracking or bill-of-lading number, and the ETA for your port or door. For sea shipments we pass along vessel and container details as the forwarder issues them.
What payment methods and terms do you accept?
Standard production terms are 30% deposit before production and 70% balance before shipment. We accept T/T bank transfer, PayPal and Western Union. The formal invoice names the account details for your order.
What if PayPal does not work in my country?
T/T bank transfer is the universal fallback — it works in every country we ship to and is the standard rail for B2B orders. PayPal and Western Union are alternatives for sample fees and smaller balances.
I have sent a purchase order — when does production actually start?
A PO starts commercial review, not cutting. The sequence is PO, then proforma invoice, then production scheduling once two gates close: the deposit is received and the sample is approved in writing. Lead-time background is on the manufacturing process page.
Mahjong Design, Files & IP
Do I need CAD files or technical drawings to order?
No. Send reference photos, a sketch with dimensions, or a physical reference tile. We provide design-for-manufacture review and produce the production drawing for your approval before sampling.
What artwork file format do you need for engraving or printing?
Outlined vector files (AI, EPS, PDF, SVG) are required for engraving and printing. Raster files can serve as references; if redraw or vector preparation is needed we quote that separately. Our customization page lists the artwork file standard.
Can you match a Pantone or brand HEX colour exactly?
Send a physical Pantone chip or an agreed colour target, because a HEX value alone is screen-dependent. We propose the closest in-stock cast PMMA sheet and lock it against the approved physical sample. A 100% exact match to a Pantone reference is not promised from stock sheet. Color matching is explained on the custom mahjong tiles page.
Will you sign an NDA? Who owns my artwork and drawings?
We do not sign NDAs on mahjong projects. Mahjong production is a multi-partner supply chain — materials, engraving, printing, accessories, packaging — that a single-factory NDA cannot honestly bind. For non-mahjong acrylic projects, an NDA is available on request. Full reasoning is in the answers in this section. On every line, your designs, drawings, artwork and trademarks remain your property; we use them only to quote, sample and manufacture your order, never publish them, never reuse them and never offer them to another buyer. Commercial terms are in our payment and shipping terms.
Do you offer custom retail packaging, and at what quantities?
Standard protective packing — bags, inserts and export cartons — is included in the unit price on every order. Custom retail packaging (printed sleeves, fitted inserts, gift boxes) joins from 1,000 sets and is quoted per specification.
Do you manufacture electronic or lit mahjong tables?
No. USMJ manufactures acrylic mahjong tile sets, display and travel cases, racks and pushers, and accessories. Send the non-electrical acrylic specification and we will confirm what is in scope.
What We Do Not Make
Is there anything USMJ does not manufacture?
Yes. We fabricate from cast PMMA sheet — CNC machining, laser engraving, UV printing, clear-coat sealing, lamination, bonding and assembly — so anything that requires injection moulding or resin casting is outside our process. Our tiles are game tiles in cast PMMA; we do not make building or flooring products.
Do you make bone, bakelite or resin-cast tiles?
No. Bone and bakelite tiles are different materials and processes; resin casting is a moulding process we do not run. What we do build in cast PMMA: tile sets, cases, racks and pushers, laser engraving inside the material, and clear-coat sealed UV printing on the face.
How should I clean and care for acrylic mahjong tiles?
Wipe tiles with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water or a mild non-solvent cleaner. Do not use alcohol, acetone, ammonia-based sprays or abrasive pads — they can craze or scratch the cast PMMA surface. Store sets in the provided case or insert to prevent tile-to-tile contact during transport.
