How Laser Engraving Mahjong Tiles Works

In laser engraving, a laser removes material to form a channel in the shape of the character. The channel is then filled with color and the face is sealed. Because the mark is in the acrylic rather than on it, the character survives years of shuffling. Engraving also gives the tactile feel many traditional players expect.

The limit is color: each channel takes one fill, so a multi-color illustration is hard to engrave well.

How UV Printed Mahjong Tiles Work

A UV printer jets ink onto the tile face and cures it instantly with ultraviolet light. It prints full color with fine detail, which makes it the route for illustrated Jokers, photographic flowers, brand logos in exact colors, and seasonal art. There are no screens or plates, so changing artwork between runs is cheap.

The limit is surface wear: ink sits on top of the tile, so it needs a clear-coat seal to stand up to play.

    Why the Clear-Coat Seal Matters

Both routes finish with a clear coat over the face. On engraved tiles it protects the color fill; on printed tiles it protects the ink. Ask any supplier whether the seal is included in the price — an unsealed printed tile can look fine on arrival and scuff within weeks.

You can see where each step happens in our mahjong manufacturing process.

    Which Route for Which Tile?

    • Suit, wind and dragon faces: engraving, for durability and feel.
    • Jokers and flowers: UV printing, for full-color artwork.
    • Tile-back logo: engraving for a subtle mark, UV printing for a colored logo.
    • Large print faces: engraving with a high-contrast fill reads best.

For a branded mahjong set, the usual spec is engraved suits, UV-printed Jokers carrying the brand art, and an engraved logo on every tile back.

UV printing is also what makes seasonal and themed designs practical — Halloween, holiday or floral Jokers can change from one run to the next without touching the engraved suits. That is how brands build unique mahjong sets on the same base tile.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do engraved mahjong tiles wear off?

The character does not, because it is cut into the tile. The color fill can dull over many years; the clear coat slows that down.

    Can UV-printed mahjong tiles scratch?

Unsealed, yes. With a clear-coat seal they hold up in normal play.

Can I combine engraving and UV printing on one set?

Yes. Engraved suits with UV-printed Jokers is the most common custom spec.

    Which route costs more?

Laser engraving is the default route in our pricing. UV-printed suit colors and tile-back logos are quoted per specification. See the custom mahjong set cost guide.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MOQ for a custom mahjong set?

Fully custom tiles start at 50 sets per design with standard packaging and stock accessories. Accessory customization starts at 250 sets and custom packaging at 1,000 sets. A different artwork, tile size or format counts as a separate design.

How long does a custom mahjong order take?

Paid samples take 5–7 days for a single engraved tile, about 7 days for a 12-tile color check, or 7–10 days for a full set including air freight. Production takes 15–20 days after sample approval, then air freight 3–7 days or sea freight 14–30 days.

Do sample fees come off the production order?

No. Sample fees are quoted and paid separately and are not credited to production orders. The sample exists to settle the specification before the bulk run.

Can you match a Pantone color exactly?

We match from the in-stock cast PMMA sheet range to your Pantone or hex target and lock the choice against the approved physical sample. A 100% exact match to a Pantone reference is not promised from stock sheet.

Will you sign an NDA for our mahjong artwork?

Not for mahjong projects. Your artwork is used only for your production, never published, never reused and never offered to another buyer, but mahjong production is a multi-partner supply chain that a single-factory NDA cannot honestly bind. For non-mahjong acrylic projects, an NDA is available on request.

Put the specification in the quote

Send the format, tile size, engraving route, color target, accessories, packaging tier, quantity and artwork status. We return a line-item quote and a paid-sample plan against that specification.
