Standard Mahjong Tile Sizes
These are the three tile bodies we machine every day. All three are cut from cast acrylic with a 0.3 mm chamfer on the play edges.
| Size class | H × W × T (mm) | Typical use | Feel on the table |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact / standard | 30 × 23 × 13 | American NMJL sets, travel sets | Light, easy to shuffle, fits standard racks |
| Mid | 32 × 23 × 13 | Gift sets, club sets | Slightly taller face, same rack width |
| Full-size | 36 × 25 × 15 | Chinese and Hong Kong sets, premium sets | Heavier, classic "click", larger characters |
| Jumbo / large print | ≈ 40–44 tall | Senior players, low-vision players, display | Easiest to read, needs longer racks |
Custom sizes are possible: the tile body is drawn to your dimension and approved on a sample. See the size and format table on our mahjong tile sets page.
Large, Jumbo and Large Print Mahjong Tiles
"Large" is used loosely online. When buyers ask for extra large mahjong tiles or jumbo mahjong tiles, they usually mean one of two things:
- Bigger bodies — 40 mm or 44 mm tall tiles that sit higher in the rack.
- Large print faces — a standard or full-size body with bigger characters and corner numbers.
Large print on a 36 mm body is often the better choice. It reads almost as clearly as a jumbo tile but still fits a normal table and a portable case. A true jumbo set adds weight, table space and shipping volume.
How to Choose a Mahjong Tile Size
- Start with the players. Younger or travelling players prefer 30 mm tiles; seniors and clubs prefer 36 mm or large print.
- Check the format. A 152-tile American set in 36 mm tiles is noticeably heavier than a 144-tile Chinese set in 30 mm tiles.
- Think about storage. The case has to hold the tiles plus racks, dice and bags.
- Hold a sample. A single engraved sample tile costs $40–80 and takes 5–7 days. It settles the size question faster than any drawing.
Tile Size Sets Rack Length
A rack is drawn around the tile. Its length follows the number of tiles a player holds and the tile width; its slot height follows the tile height and thickness. That is why mah jongg racks with pushers are always specified together with the tile size, not after it.
If you are ordering a mahjong set with racks, send the approved tile size first. For American sets, racks usually hold two rows and include a pusher arm; buyers comparing mahjong sets with pushers should check that the pusher length matches the rack length.
Tile Size Sets Case Size
The case insert is also drawn from the tile body. A travel case for 30 mm tiles is compact; the same set in 36 mm tiles needs a deeper insert and a stronger latch. Our travel mahjong set cases are cut to the tile size approved on the sample, with foam, felt or silicone-cradle inserts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard size of a mahjong tile?
About 30 × 23 × 13 mm for American and travel sets; about 36 × 25 × 15 mm for full-size Chinese sets.
What are jumbo mahjong tiles?
Tiles of roughly 40 mm tall or more, usually with large print faces. They need longer racks and a bigger case.
Do mahjong racks fit every tile size?
No. Specify racks for the exact tile size in the set.
Can I order a custom tile size?
Yes. Custom sizes are drawn to your dimensions and confirmed on a paid sample. Fully custom tiles start at 50 sets per design.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MOQ for a custom mahjong set?
Fully custom tiles start at 50 sets per design with standard packaging and stock accessories. Accessory customization starts at 250 sets and custom packaging at 1,000 sets. A different artwork, tile size or format counts as a separate design.
How long does a custom mahjong order take?
Paid samples take 5–7 days for a single engraved tile, about 7 days for a 12-tile color check, or 7–10 days for a full set including air freight. Production takes 15–20 days after sample approval, then air freight 3–7 days or sea freight 14–30 days.
Do sample fees come off the production order?
No. Sample fees are quoted and paid separately and are not credited to production orders. The sample exists to settle the specification before the bulk run.
Can you match a Pantone color exactly?
We match from the in-stock cast PMMA sheet range to your Pantone or hex target and lock the choice against the approved physical sample. A 100% exact match to a Pantone reference is not promised from stock sheet.
Will you sign an NDA for our mahjong artwork?
Not for mahjong projects. Your artwork is used only for your production, never published, never reused and never offered to another buyer, but mahjong production is a multi-partner supply chain that a single-factory NDA cannot honestly bind. For non-mahjong acrylic projects, an NDA is available on request.
Put the specification in the quote
Send the format, tile size, engraving route, color target, accessories, packaging tier, quantity and artwork status. We return a line-item quote and a paid-sample plan against that specification.
